Were you a Military BRAT? Do you have a BRAT in your family? Did you move frequently as your military parent transferred from assignment to assignment? Did you attend multiple schools before you graduated high school? Did you attend a Department of Defense school overseas anytime between 1946 and the present? Did you or a family member work in one of these schools? If you answered yes to any of these questions, the American Overseas Schools Historical Society (AOSHS) will interest you.
The Department of Defense has been educating military dependents overseas since 1946 and has proven to be an important component of military family life. AOSHS, a non-profit organization, operating since 1978, has dedicated its operation to collecting and sharing information about these schools along with communicating their colorful history.
AOSHS has thousands of artifacts, memorability, and documents for the public to view. Photos of you or your family, places you lived and schools you attended, classmates and teachers may be included. Much of the collection can be viewed on line with more being added each day. With the opening of its museum in April, AOSHS will broaden its scope in sharing the story of these schools and those who attended and worked in them with the world.
Check out their website (www.AOSHS.org) for a walk down memory lane.
