Suicide is a problem that touches the lives of many Americans. Many of us may know someone, such as a friend, family member, or coworker who has attempted or died by suicide. Over the past two decades, suicide rates have steadily risen in the United States. Suicide is currently ranked 10th for cause of death among all ages. It’s important for you to know that suicide is preventable. With commitment and engagement in our communities, workplaces, and homes, together we can help reduce the number of suicides.

Dear Comrades and Auxiliary Members of VFW Post 8738,
As my term as Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8738 comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey we have shared. Serving as your Post Commander has been a tremendous honor, and it is with a profound sense of gratitude and pride that I write this farewell message to you all.
When I first took on this role, my primary goal was to ensure that Post 8738 remained a steadfast pillar of support for our local veterans, their families, and our community. Looking back at what we have accomplished together, I can say with absolute certainty that we have upheld and exceeded the highest traditions of the VFW. I am incredibly proud of the milestones we have reached during my two years as Commander. Our Post has achieved both All-State and All-American status each year—a direct testament to your hard work and dedication. We have grown our ranks and strengthened our future by welcoming 55 new Comrades into our Post family.
We also deepened our local roots by forging a strong relationship with the Town of Lexington Town Council, where it has been our distinct honor to regularly lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Most recently, we successfully petitioned Lexington County and the State General Assembly to dedicate Cedarcrest Drive to "All Veterans of Lexington County". Through our highly successful Gala fundraiser and the relentless efforts of our members, we were able to donate an astounding $40,463 to veterans programs and award $1,300 in scholarships to deserving students, teachers and first responders. Furthermore, our Post logged over 1,579 community service hours, proving once again that our commitment to service does not end when we take off the uniform. None of this would have been possible without the unwavering dedication of our Post Officers, our hardworking Auxiliary, and every single member who volunteered their time and energy. A Post is only as strong as its members, and your commitment to our shared mission has been the driving force behind all our successes. I am deeply thankful for the trust you placed in me and for the support you provided throughout my tenure. As I step down and pass the gavel to Commander-Elect Scott Craig, I do so with absolute confidence in the future of Post 8738. I ask that you give Scott the same outstanding support and dedication that you have so generously given me.
Though my time as Commander is ending and I transition to my new role at District 2, my commitment to this Post, District, Department and to our fellow veterans remains as strong as ever. I look forward to continuing to serve alongside you, supporting our mission to assist veterans and their families.
Thank you once again for the privilege of leading VFW Post 8738.Yours in comradeship,Darren M. WisemanCommander, Post 8738Chairman, Dept of SC Veterans and MilitarySupport Programs
